MFB, the Berlin-based brainchild of the late sonic innovator Manfred Fricke, is well known for being a company which releases no-nonsense drum machines and synthesisers with a raw and retro feel, and the Tanzmaus is no exception.
This sample pack comes with 305 One-Shots, with the drum voices organised into their respective folders - Bass Drums (BD), Snare Drums (SD), the Rimshot (RS), Claps (CP), Toms (TT) and Samples (SP). Each voice includes samples of ‘Basic’ sounds from the Tanzmaus, lightly processed to boost the volume while taming harsh resonance. As well as the ‘Basic’ sounds, this pack also features folders of ‘Grit’ sounds which are processed through various distortion effects such as the Elektron Analog Heat, iZotope Trash 2, UAD Studer A800 and FabFilter Saturn.
There are also 10 sample chains – those in the Sample Chains (24-Bit 44.1kHz) folder are accompanied by .ot files, which are essentially tiny data files which the Elektron Octatrack uses to apply slice points to each chain, allowing Octatrack users to get stuck in with a minimum of fuss.
There is also the Sample Chains (16-Bit 48kHz) folder, which contain the same one-shots in a similar chained fashion to the above, but shortened and encoded in a format which best suits the Elektron Digitakt’s Slice Machine, introduced in firmware 1.50. These sample chains feature one-shots which have been individually shortened from the one-shots and 24-bit, 44.1kHz variants, so they take up less space in the Digitakt’s limited storage.
Finally, there is an Ableton Live Drum Selector rack (will work in Live Suite 11.2 and above) which allows you to program a pattern and change the sample with the turn of an encoder, as well as alter decay, pitch, distortion, compression and more with ease. In this selector kit, the Basic sounds are on one track (with the bass drums in their separate cells) and the Grit sounds are in another track. These tracks are set to MIDI channels 1 and 2 respectively, so they can be sequenced separately.
These samples are presented royalty-free, meaning you can make any music you want with them without having to cut me in on any of the profits.
Pairing wonky synths with crisp samples, the California-born, Berlin-based producer specializes in minimal house with a carefree spirit.
